Nutrition is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as:
- The process of nourishing or being nourished, especially the process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and for replacement of tissues.
- The science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans.
- A source of nourishment; food.
Well, does that answer your question? We only wish it was that easy! With our busy lives we are creating bad habits like eating at our desk for lunch or grabbing something quick from one practice to another. What we are doing is creating new eating habits that are terrible and passing it down to the next generation. Fast, cheap, processed food is becoming the answer for convenience and our bodies are paying for it.
Some food for thought…
Think about how much we try and save on cheap processed food. Think about how much we spend on that food and how often we eat out. (Fast food is no different than most restaurants! Disagree? Check the nutrition before you go to that restaurant and order that meal.) So, are we really saving a lot of money as a country? Not really, especially when you think about the health care cost and what we are paying for it per month. What’s our point? By slowing down and/or preparing good quality food and spending more, we would be healthier and our health insurance would be less. It would be a win win situation.
Think not, well what if insurance companies start offering physicals with blood work for your health insurance rate, similar to life insurance and we pay our premium based on that information. Your employer would support a program like that! They pay a certain amount towards your benefits for what’s considered normal or health and the remaining or increased premium is paid by you. This would save companies billions and it’s not too far off!
At this CrossFit location in Dallas we support two different nutrition plans as well as most of the CrossFit community. This is nothing we came up with. Those diets are the Paleo Diet and the Zone Diet. Both nutrition plans are very effective. We recommend the Paleo Diet for most of our athletes and a Zone-Paleo combination for our competing/elite athletes. Take a look at the above links and choose what works best for you.
Remember, food is the most powerful drug you will ever put in your body.
